Schedule Shorter Video Calls

When you’re on an online call you don’t need to run to a conference room or take time to set up the projector. Because you eliminate all these added tasks, meetings end up being hyper-efficient. A 30 minute-long video call can end up feeling like an hour and an hour-long call can feel like an eternity. By scheduling shorter video calls on your team’s calendar, you help free up their time to do more of the work that matters.

Always Join Calls On Mute

Barking dog? Crying newborn? Toast munchin’? Keep the soundtrack of your home to yourself by making “Mute Microphone” the default setting for when you join a call. Just go into your video conference software’s preferences to make the switch.

Check Your Camera & Lights

That dramatic look you get from your camera by default will work for Bruce Wayne, but, that doesn’t mean it will work for your meeting. Make sure you’re well lit, and your camera is level to your face. Most of your coworkers don’t want to see your nose hairs, but some of your coworkers eat their own boogers. So be careful out there.

Block Out Your Time

Now that working from home has become mainstream, all forms of communication are being done through email, IM, calls and video conferencing. Those waves of notifications are a lot for human brains to handle. That’s why blocking out time in your day to accomplish tasks is so important for maintaining focus. Colleagues will learn not to schedule meetings over your deep productivity time and lunches, and you’ll feel less burnt out in the long-run.

Stick To An Agenda

Your calls are shorter, your calendar is blocked off, and your nose hairs are trimmed. The best thing you can do for you and your coworkers is to keep your meeting concise. Focus on your collective goals as a team. Of course, work in time for some general chit-chat, but don’t let it go too long. If you respect your invitee’s time, they’ll respect yours.
